Great mix. One I would've added is Soul Coughing's "Screenwriter's Blues." It might be too much Doughty, and the Industry sleaze thing doesn't seem to be what you're going for, but buried in there is the perfect description of a smoggy Los Angeles sunrise.

Plus, you: "...even the bad stuff is kinda like having front-row seats to the apocalypse."
Doughty: "We are all in one way or another going to Reseda... to die."

Apocalypse indeed, though in rush hour traffic it feels like a back-row seat.

>>One I would’ve added is Soul Coughing’s “Screenwriter’s Blues.”<<

That's a good one. I have to admit that I wasn't even thinking of that song as I was writing the post. But I'm pretty sure that when I was choosing the tracks I passed it over in favor of the Doughty solo--for reasons of greater obscurity or maybe just the "human" thing as stated above.

And of course (with exceptions[?]) my general rule (usually) is to limit one song per artist (most of the time) on a given mix. As noted above, Frank Black alone has released like an EP worth of L.A. songs. Of course, a case could be made that Doughty solo is different enough from the Cough, but hey. Maybe there'll be a part two.

"Why You'd Want To Live Here" by Death Cab would have fit nicely into this mix as well.

It was most def. under consideration, but Meloy & co. got the "Northwest indie rockers dissing L.A." slot.
